The garden is in full flow now even though this year I haven’t had as much time to devote to it. It seems to be happily doing it’s thing anyway and in June this means roses. I suppose I am happily reaping the rewards of previous years’ planting.
In fact the new roses I added this year haven’t flowered yet so I will have to wait for later in the summer or future years for the fruits of my labour.
I am joining in with The Propagator and his troupe of horticultural devotees to show six things in our gardens this weekend.
1. Tess of the d’Urbevilles

This magnificent crimson rose named after Thomas Harry’s tragic heroine grows happily by our front door, seen here with white valerian.
2. Lady of Shalott

Regular followers of SOS will know that this is one of my very favourite roses which I grow with Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ for maximum orange!
3. Gertrude Jekyll

This is widely acknowledged to be one of the very best shrub roses and like the previous two is a David Austin rose. As well as the pretty pink colour it has a divine scent and is repeat flowering.
4. Lady Emma Hamilton

Another orange rose but one with subtle differences named after Lord Nelson’s mistress. The flower is a little more compact than Lady of Shalott, the colours richer.
5. Ranunculus

I’m not sure of the name of this big buttercup which has taken over a border. I know I need to take it out but it looks so pretty with the blue geraniums and Astrantia that I am leaving it a little longer.
6. Pinks

Finally here is the trough of pinks I planted last summer which made it through the winter unscathed and have flowered again in a profusion of prettiness.
A lovely selection that has left me wondering if I have space for a Tess of the d’Urbevilles.

So many lovely roses! I can hardly wait for the summer to come around here again now.

Rose heaven! I really couldn’t choose one in particular. The buttercup could be creeping buttercup. I agree it is very beautiful in flower but likes to take over, although I expect you realised that!

I had a similar thought. They do look lovely in flower, but boy can they spread!

Fabulous roses, I feel for Tess too, at least partly for the name, though mine’s new and not in flower yet, and I’ve got Lady Emma H too, though you’re ahead there too with the flowering. Very taken with your Lady of Shallot and Geum combo, orange is a great colour!

Lovely roses and a reminder to me that I haven’t any pinks this year. 🤔🙄 I haven’t been to a garden centre for ages so maybe I will go and pick up an established plant for the patio table, they smell so nice.

Rose heaven, indeed! Seems only right and proper to add Tess and Gertrude to my primary wishlist. Lady Emma and Shalott would also metit consideration!
Would you have a recommendation for a rambling rose on a sunny wall?

Maybe Malvern Hills which is a lovely small pale yellow flower or Paul’s Himalayan Musk which is a pretty pale pink.
